In preparation for Unconscious Bias training

Thank you for making the time to participate in the upcoming unconscious bias training.

In preparation for the module around implicit bias, participants are asked to take AT LEAST TWO (2) of the Implicit Association Tests (IATs) from the links below. Researchers at the University of Washington, University of Virginia, Harvard University, and Yale University have collaborated to further develop these tests, and are available at no cost. They are meant to be done quickly, and should only take about five minutes each.

And 15 American IATs at: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

Please take at least two of any of the available Canadian and/or American IATs. We will review the findings at the workshop. If you have difficulty with a specific test, please just find an alternate test to take. Some of them are formatted slightly different. Although the surveys do ask for your profile information, submitting this information is optional.

Caveat

The IATs are not perfect. They are not meant to be a conclusive assessment of your cognitive biases. However, they have been effective in stimulating self-reflection and conversation around what hidden biases you might have. There’s a possibility that you might disagree with the results. There are also instances where folks who make an extra effort to get the responses right might actually end up showing more bias. Self-awareness of our unconscious bias is not the key to solving discrimination. That said, it is still helpful to getting to the structural solutions that can disrupt inequity in our workplace systems. For that reason, the IATs remain a helpful tool, among all sorts of tools, that support the development of self-awareness.
